162 Social activities In the early years of its existence, the Association was extremely successful at holding social gatherings for the staff. These events, held mainly in the Exchange Control Department in the Barnes Building on Fridays after work, brought together significant numbers of management and staff who often remained there into the early hours of the next day. The Recreation Room in the Barnes Building was also the venue for the keep-fit classes that commenced during the early 1980s. Staff magazines In January 1981, the Association started a staff magazine called Bank Notes . Carl Moore was technical adviser to the first editorial committee. The first issue of 12 pages featured the new MIS Department that had been established in the previous year. On the front cover was a photograph of the staff members in that department. Bank Notes was intended to be a quarterly publication and in the first year there were four issues; this never happened again.
