Both Sides of The Coin: The Story of The Central Bank of Barbados 1972-2017

164 Sporting activities The Staff Association was always involved in sporting activities. Cricket was the Association’s favourite sport and the group participated in a wide range of cricket matches, including the domestic inter-bank competition, internal matches between management and staff, one-off events against public or private sector entities, as well as matches against other central banks, both at home and abroad. The outstanding performers were mainly batsmen, in particular Carlisle Best, Anthony Cadogan, Andrew Layne and Lindsay Holder. The Association’s teams were competitive against the central bank opposition but disappointed on occasion. During its first trip abroad, in 1978 to Trinidad and Tobago to participate in a regional central bank competition, the team placed third and its “performance was not generally outstanding”, according to a report by Cleviston Haynes. When the Association was guest of the BOJ at Easter 1982, the Jamaicans won everything, including cricket in the absence of key batsman Carlisle Best. For the Bank’s Tenth Anniversary Celebrations in 1982, the Association helped to arrange the highly successful fun sports which were held at the Cable and Wireless grounds at Wildey. During the celebratory cricket match the staff easily defeated the management, by 89 runs. Carlisle Best (54) and “Teddy” Griffith (26) were the top performers for staff and management, respectively. The Association was aware that involvement in all of these sporting activities underscored the need for a sports facility. It therefore considered building a temporary structure at Delamere Land, Belmont Andrew Layne (left) and Carlisle Best.
