During 2015, the visiting fellow was Dr. Peter Blair Henry from the Stern School of Business at New York University, followed by Dr. Simon Johnson of the Massachussets Institute of Technology in 2016. The use of video Mindful that “a picture is worth a thousand words”, the Bank from relatively early utilised video documentaries and other cinematographic productions to enhance its public outreach programme. Most of the documentaries were produced on the occasions of the Bank’s significant anniversaries (namely the 20th, 25th and 40th) or for use during the RIMS exhibitions (in 1988, for example). In the main, they explained various aspects of the Bank’s work and/or its relation to the wider economy. The productions were occasioned by both internal and external considerations. In 1991, when the manufacturing sector was struggling, a 20-minute feature entitled Protection and Finance for Your Exports was used to advertise the Special Schemes offered by the Export Credit Insurance and Guarantees Department. Similarly, during 2001, the Bank, in collaboration with the Audio Visual Aids Department, produced the video Our Money: A Closer Look , in response to a request from schools for more information on the Barbadian currency. It was at the end of the first decade of the new century that the Public Affairs Section, under the leadership of Novaline Brewster, started to embrace visual media in a big way. When the National Financial Education Programme was launched in 2009, one of its marketing tools was television interviews. Governor Worrell, who took office later that year, supported more intensive use of the website and encouraged a greater reliance on visual presentations. Media conferences, the governor’s major speaking engagements and other public outreach initiatives were streamed live on the website. From 2012 to 2016, there were annual television series that examined a range of economic issues, including foreign exchange (2012) and competitiveness (2014).
