The first numismatic coins came out in 1973 when the Bank collaborated with the Franklin Mint in producing an eight-coin proof set of circulation coins in celebration of the first issue of Barbadian coins. The circulation coins were the one cent, five cents, 10 cents, 25 cents and one dollar and there were silver coins in $2, $5 and $10 denominations. Patriotism was the main theme of the numismatic programme. Major historical milestones were celebrated by the issue of gold coins. Examples are the 350th Anniversary of the Settlement of Barbados at Holetown (1975), the 350th Anniversary of Parliament (1989) and the 375th Anniversary of the City of Bridgetown (2003).
