Both Sides of The Coin: The Story of The Central Bank of Barbados 1972-2017

218 When doing research, Roland collaborated with anyone - a governor, an intern in the Research Department, a technician at the Caribbean Development Bank or a regional academic. Indeed, for a time he was responsible for guiding the research work of the interns. Fellow researchers at the Bank and elsewhere relied on his obvious mastery of econometric techniques to help explain and legitimise their output. Because of this the vast majority of his papers were co-authored. Roland co-edited, and wrote papers for, the three Anniversary volumes that were published while he worked at the Bank. For the 1997 book, he contributed a paper on the challenges associated with forecasting at the Bank and collaborated with Librarian Aldeen Payne in compiling a bibliography of works published by Bank staff which became a standard feature of later Anniversary books. For the 2003 and 2007 Anniversary publications he co-authored two and three articles, respectively. His research interests were wide. Among his topics were fiscal policy, finance, money demand, savings, consumption, economic growth, interest rates, tourism, modelling, the labour market, the Stock Exchange, competitiveness, the poultry industry, ATMs, credit unions, the foreign exchange market, financial liberalisation and the business cycle. Roland’s contribution to a better understanding of economics was not confined to Central Bank publications. He was also an active member of the BES, sitting on its Executive Committee as a floor member on a few occasions and as president from 1999 to 2000. His support for the BES Newsletter was well-known. The December 1988 issue includes his report on the 8th Latin American Meeting of the Econometric Society. However, his first real scholarly contribution, Some Useful Checks for Model Evaluation , appeared in the March 1990 issue. Thereafter, he was a regular and reliable contributor on a wide range of topics, some of which, like his article On the Theory of Bargaining, (featured in two issues of the newsletter during 2006), were good enough for publication in a journal. This piece was also featured in the Society’s Special Issue of Published Articles and Speeches in December 2010. Roland's outstanding service to the BES was recognised by the presentation of an award at the 25th Anniversary dinner of the Society in January 2009. Professor Craigwell died on January 2, 2014.
