Chapter 5: Some Notable Developments 219 Commemorative publications and individual efforts Mention has to be made of special issues by Bank staff. First, there were the collections of papers published in commemoration of the Bank’s anniversaries. The first appeared in 1982, on the occasion of the Central Bank’s Tenth Anniversary. Entitled The Economy of Barbados: 1946-1980 , it was an assessment of the post-World War II economy. In addition to a survey there were chapters on the sugar industry, tourism, manufacturing and the external sector plus a select bibliography on the economy. In 1997 for its 25th Anniversary, the Bank published the second volume of work on the Barbadian economy, Central Banking in Barbados: Reflections and Challenges ; it was dedicated to “the pioneers” and was more issues-oriented than the 1982 volume. In February of the following year, a compilation of all the Sir Winston Scott Memorial Lectures from 1976 to 1996 was launched. The 30th Anniversary book, Facing Globalisation: Impact and Challenges for Barbados and the Caribbean , was published on June 20, 2003. Professor Michael Howard, who reviewed the book at the launch, stated that it filled a void in the subject area but felt that it should have included some Clockwise from top left: Covers of the 10th, 25th, 30th and 35th Anniversary publications.
