During 2005, Jennifer Clarke (nowClarke-Murrell) won silver in the Coleman Thomas Darts Classic, defeating two national players and Dave Gittens was the Darts Association ‘Rookie of the Year’. Mark Blenman was also adjudged best marksman in a 2005 shooting tournament. In 2006, Linel Franklin managed the Barbados Women’s field hockey team to the Commonwealth Games in Australia. However, Carlisle Best and Octavia Gibson gained national acclaim. CARLISLE BEST: The Bank’s most accomplished sportsman Carlisle Best is easily the Bank’s most accomplished sportsman. From 1977, the year he joined the Bank, until 1995, he played cricket for the local First Division team Empire. During the early 1980s, Carlisle represented the Bank in cricket and table tennis. In 1984 he became the youngest ever skipper of the Barbados cricket team at age 24 and led the team to its 11th Shell Shield victory in the series’ 18-year history. Playing for Empire during the domestic season, Carlisle scored 450 runs at an average of 45. In the Shell Shield competition, his aggregate of 518 runs was the highest for any batsman. Not surprisingly, he was chosen as the National Sports Council’s “Sportsman of the Year” and “Sports Personality”. During 1989, Carlisle played professionally for Netherfield in the English Cricket League and in the following year was selected to the West Indies team against the English tourists, scoring 164 in the fourth test match at Kensington Oval. Carlisle was also a professional cricketer for Western Province in South Africa during the 1993-94 season. He represented Yorkshire in the domestic Masters cricket competition between 2004 and 2006 and Empire thereafter, helping the latter club to win the tournament in 2007.
