Both Sides of The Coin: The Story of The Central Bank of Barbados 1972-2017

292 Appendix 4: The Inter-Departmental Quiz (1998) APPENDIX 4 THE INTER-DEPARTMENTAL QUIZ (1998) During the 1990s, the Sports and Cultural Club used many activities to generate enthusiasm among its members; one of them was an inter-departmental quiz in 1998 and 1999. The first quiz was held after work on Tuesdays and Thursdays on Level 4 during July and August 1998. The quiz took off like a jet plane. According to the small change issue of June 19, 1998, “People are dusting off F.A. Hoyos’s books on Barbadian history. Some are taking home piles of documents every evening and poring through Central Bank Annual Reports from the seventies. The Bank’s and the Government Information Service’s new websites are reporting numerous hits each day.” After a week of riveting competion, it was standing room only for the Finals on Friday August 7. Governor Cox and his wife were there as well as former governor, Sir Courtney Blackman. The contest started at 4:45 p.m. and around 5:30 p.m. Washbrook Bayne announced the scores: Bank Supervision 20, Banking and Currency 14. After the governor had congratulated the winners and commiserated with the runners-up, the prizes were presented by Deputy Governor Marion Williams, the governor’s spouse and his daughter. Thereafter, the president of the Sports and Cultural Club, Barbara Daniel, thanked the organisers and helpers. Following this, the music, food and drinks kept conversations going for hours. The quiz did much for camaraderie and cohesiveness in the Bank. The small change special edition of August 8, 1998, reported what happened that evening. The editor wrote, inter alia , that “... An ideal which had eluded us these past 12 years since we took up residence in this spanking new building seemed a wee bit closer as Management and staff came together to congratulate Bank Supervision on their victory.”
