The formation of the ECG Department and, particularly, the MIS Department was responsible for the creation of a number of specialist positions (computer programmers, for example) during the early part of the period. The construction of the headquarters building between 1981 and 1986 also led to new job creation. As that project neared completion, positions were created relating to maintenance, security and the operation of the Frank Collymore Hall. Several of the new jobs were located in the Research Department which was absorbing the resources necessary to the strengthening of its statistics-gathering and publications capabilities. For example, in 1977, posts of assistant librarian and graduate trainee were created; during the following year, the latter post was upgraded to the level of junior economist and additional positions of economist were added to the establishment during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Staff development Training continued to be an integral part of the Bank’s development strategy. There was an increase in the number of courses offered and they became more diversified. Apart from training that was pertinent to its core operations, the programme included several courses aimed at the personal development of staff.
