The rewards combine taste sensations, value for money and friendly people outside your normal orbit. Go, and you can enjoy bragging rights. A Real Local Experience The backstory: When Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme participants were challenged to create a business idea that involved heritage tourism, Kim Hamblin and Dwight Forde came up with this winning idea. After much planning and testing, they set up in the broad front yard of Kim’s family’s historic home, adding a small, professional kitchen in the back. At four years in, they’ve got this down. Location: Abberfoyle, Black Rock Main Road, opposite Chefette. Know before you go: There’s no big signage, so look hard. It’s mostly takeaway, though there are a couple of big tables if you can’t wait to eat. Expect to share space with their loyal following on Saturdays. The cheery and super-engaged staff happily give taste samples. The outer char suffuses them with a flavour that tastes like heaven on a grill. On Thursdays, thin breadfruit slices are made into taco shells instead. It’s genius.
