Ins & Outs of SVG 2020

Adventure in Day tours sailing around the southern Grenadines are absolutely superb. A day sailing to the Tobago Cays Marine Park, beginning with a rum punch in the sea at Saltwhistle Bay in Mayreau, snorkeling on the World’s End Reef and ending with a lovely lunch moored in the Cays is at the top of the list. A swim at the sandy island of Morpion followed by snorkeling and lunch in tranquil Chatham Bay is another blissful day. But here are a few other things to enjoy on or in the sea while you’re here. A Half Day That Changes Your Life! The Introductory Diving course gets divers in the water and on a dive on the first day! Your first lesson starts in shallow sea (approx. 1 hr), where new divers are introduced to their equipment and taught a few basic skills and exercises to build confidence. After this, it’s off to the reef for your first dive. The next hour is spent getting comfortable and getting below the surface. The Horse Shoe Reef or Petit Tabac are both perfect for first time divers – no current, no waves and once you choose your comfort zone, whether it’s 2 feet below or 40 feet below, there is more marine life to see than you have eyes for! Introductory Courses are offered by Glenroy Adams at Grenadines Dive, Clifton Harbour, Union Island. Wading in crystal clear waters with the rays and juvenile sharks while watching pelicans dive for fish is in itself an amazing experience. But this is topped off by catching bone fish weighing over 10lbs, along with tarpon and permits. This was only recently discovered by knowlegeable local fisherman Sébastien Sailly who, having mastered the skill, now offers catch and release fly fishing expeditions to his favourite spots. He does have Orvis equipment for rent if necessary. Turtle Watching in Bloody Bay The turtle nesting season is from March to September. Union Island Environmental Attackers take people on their turtle patrols. The cost is US$23 per person. They leave around 7pm from Hugh Mulzac Square in Clifton and tours generally last for 2 1/2 hours. There were 17 nestings in 2019. Highlights include seeing Leather Back Turtles either laying in March, April and May or baby hatchlings from June to September. 134 UNION ISLAND INS& UTS Union Island Leather Back Turtle laying eggs Photo: Roseman Adams
