Ins & Outs of SVG 2020

72 DISCOVER BEQUIA INS& UTS Out & About in Visitors are often surprised to find that on an island of only seven square miles, when you scratch the surface just a little, you’ll discover an intriguing history, a fascinating natural environment and above all, a wonderfully charming human element. Whether on land, or on the sea, Bequia has a bountiful array of places to explore and a dependable range of transportation options are available to visitors. The Wonderful Walkway The delightful Belmont Walkway is a continuous coastal path that meanders along the south shore of Admiralty Bay, with a number of inviting little bars and restaurants all along the way. Stop by Gingerbread Café for a coffee under the magnificent almond tree, and as a special treat, sample Maranne’s homemade ice cream in her little shop next door. Continuing on from the walkway is the Princess Margaret Coastal Trail leading to Princess Margaret beach. At the end of Princess Margaret beach there is another trail over the hill to Lower Bay, just beyond. Bequia’s Got Talent! Whether you’re a connoisseur looking to add to your collection of Caribbean fine art or folk art, or in search of unique hand-made gifts and trinkets to take home, there is plenty of choice in Bequia. If you collect model boats this is certainly your island, for this is Bequia’s most famous art. Look for Mauvin’s and the Sargeant Brothers’ model boat shops where you will find scale replicas of Bequia built schooners and sailing boats. In Port Elizabeth, you can visit “Doc’s” new art gallery on Front Street and browse the craft stalls under the almond trees for fish and figurines carved from wood or bone and jewellery fashioned from coconut shell. On some beaches or on village streets you may chance upon other craftspeople at work; they love to share stories about what they are making and maybe make a sale too! Loads of Local Flavour Team Truland’s Rum Shop Tour operated by husband and wife team, Nate and Nicolle Truland, is a truly unique way to explore Bequia, while supporting small local businesses that you may not stumble upon otherwise. It gets you “off the beaten track” and is a wonderful opportunity to mingle with other visitors, expats and locals while combining walking, sightseeing, and of course, rum! This is a “no frills” type of tour, but if you want an authentic Bequia experience with friendly people and lots of laughs, then it’s the tour for you.
