38 Island Adventures Snorkeling There are over 90 square kilometres of coral reef surrounding Barbados, with dozens of flame-shaped reefs hugging the shoreline which can be explored simply by swimming out from the beach, particularly along the west coast. Carlisle Bay Marine Park, just south of Bridgetown is the most popular desintation. With calm, clear water and a multitude of shipwrecks full of fish and the occasional sightings of turtles and sting rays, the park has become a must see for visitors and locals alike. With the ability to do a continuous loop through the park and see a bunch of wrecks, the Carlisle Bay “wreck trek” has few equals anywhere in the world. There is a wonderful collection of waterproof Reef Smart cards available at Dive Shops islandside. Take them along with you and identify the myriad fish and critters you spot on your adventure. Be sure to snorkel with a large float so that sea craft such as speed boats and jet skis see you clearly.
