She attended Florida State and the University of California, Berkeley. Divorced and essentially a single mum, she ran the sales and rentals at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Julie then met and married her second husband Douglas Lea, who was working for TIME Magazine. Nine months later, her second baby boy came along, Zachary James Lea. The family sailed into Bequia in 1975, fell in love with the place and began visiting every winter. Disaster struck in 1994 when Zachary, a unique and brilliant young man, was killed a block from their house by a drunk driver at the age of 23. She and Doug sold their Virginia house and bought their unique, 50-year-old Bequia home in Spring. Julie continues to paint Bequia scenes, skies, people, flora and fauna, in acrylics and watercolours. She teaches art to beginning adults and Bequia school children. Her well-known Mango Art Studio is now located on the ground floor of their home, amid a lush tropical garden with spectacular hilltop views over the east coast of the island. Here you can view her new series of vibrantly-coloured prints on canvas, based on her well-loved original Bequia painting, ‘Tropical Eden’, featured on the cover.
