Chapter 5: Some Notable Developments 203 of the UWI. The first such intern was Shelton Nicholls (later Dr.) from Trinidad and Tobago in 1985. He went on to become director of the CCMF and deputy governor of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. In 1997, on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary, the Bank established a scholarship for Barbadians pursuing undergraduate studies in economics and another discipline at the Cave Hill campus of the UWI. The scholarship, which is worth $6,000 per annum for two years, included a summer internship at the Bank. An internal committee, comprising Bank Secretary (Adrian Clarke), Director of Research (Dr. Daniel Boamah) and Adviser (Harold Codrington), selected the first winner, Adrian Carter. Another scholarship, for students specialising in economics, and valued at $8,000 per annum, was added in 2003, with the first recipient being Jeremy Stephen. Some of the scholars have done very well for themselves. Worthy of mention in this regard are Adrian Carter, who became a market analyst with the Barbados Light and Power Company and Dr. Winston Moore, a scholar in the 1998-1999 academic year, who was appointed professor in the Department of Economics at the UWI, Cave Hill. At first the presentation of the awards took place during a short, private ceremony at the University but later was part of the University’s Annual Awards Ceremony for all scholarship winners. During January 1998, the Board of Directors approved the establishment of aChair inMoney and Finance at theUWI, CaveHill in honour of Dr. Blackman, and a sum of $1 million was allocated to the undertaking. From 2012 the Bank started to support the Student Programme for Innovation, Science and Engineering at the UWI, Cave Hill. This is an immersion programme for secondary school students, aged 15 to 17, who wish to pursue careers in science or engineering.
